A Retrospective On 200 Episodes

When Will and BJ started this show they had been friends for a long time. They’d seen each other through good and bad times. That’s part of where the dynamic of the show originates. Through the past few years though they’ve grown as individuals and as friends. Getting together weekly to produce creative content is a challenge. While there have been some mishaps and once or twice episodes published a little later than normal they have consistently produced a quality show every week for almost four years.

They say the journey is more important than the destination. Now that we’ve reached the end of episode 200 we can definitely say it’s been a journey. Whether you’ve been with us since our first episode in 2015 or you just started listening this week. We’re glad to have you on this journey with us. Here’s to 200 episodes of CDP, and to the path to another 200.

IoTease: Book Club

The Pragmatic Programmer

Since episode 200 is a milestone we’re going to try something new starting this month. {It helps that it comes out as the first ep of the month} Instead of a weekly IoTease segment I’ll be reading a book a month and talking a little about the chapters I read. I’ll announce the next months book before I start so everyone has the opportunity to get a copy and read along. This will be a fun expirement we’ll do for a few months to see how it goes. The first book we’ll be reading is The Pragmatic Programmer by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas. I’ve mentioned this book several times before, it’s a great reference. One of the things I like most about it is that you don’t have to read it cover to cover but can find the areas you need help and go straight there.

Tricks of the Trade

Pro-tip: There is something very like regression to the mean in technical decisions. If the decision can be made fast and by one person, it has roughly equivalent probability of being unmade fast in the same way. If management cowboy codes their decisions, by definition you become a fool if you cowboy code yours.
